Travel Light Between Check-Ins
Ask your hotel about luggage storage or check a station’s staffed facilities. Confirm hours, size limits, and pickup arrangements before leaving your bags.

For an early arrival or late departure, ask the hotel about luggage storage first. A reception desk you are already using can be simpler than creating another journey to a locker. Confirm the hours and collection arrangement before building the day around it.
Ask four concrete questions
- Can you store this size and number of bags before check-in or after check-out?
- Is there a charge, and is it hourly, daily, or included for guests?
- What is the latest collection time, and what happens if the return journey is delayed?
- How is the bag identified and who can access the storage space?
If the hotel is not on your return route
Search Amap for 行李寄存, meaning luggage storage, or 留存/Left Luggage signs at a relevant transport facility. Shanghai’s official guidance names storage options around transport and commercial areas, but availability elsewhere needs checking. A locker near a station entrance may still be outside the part of the station your onward ticket uses.
Inspect bag-size limits, the actual address, hours, payment requirements, and whether retrieval requires a live mini program or SMS. If your phone or payment app is unreliable, a staffed counter with a usable receipt may be more practical. Do not assume a listed locker has space until you can confirm it.
Keep the things you cannot leave behind
Retain your passport, valuables, essential medication, phone, and the next travel document. Save the collection token or receipt in a form you can open, and leave enough time for retrieval before security and boarding. Storage does not improve a plan if it sends you back across the city for the suitcase.
Pack the day bag before handing over luggage. A good storage choice sits along the onward route and has predictable access; if those conditions are not established, choose a less demanding outing or keep the bag with you.
