Check Access, Not Just Distance
Confirm step-free entrances, lifts, and accessible toilets with the venue or operator. Old lanes and historic buildings may need more planning than a map suggests.

A short map route can still contain a staircase, steep slope, high threshold, or long underground transfer. Describe the access you need and check the complete journey: vehicle drop-off, entrance, toilets, internal movement, and the route out again.
Replace “Is it accessible?” with specific questions
| Place | Ask about | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel | Steps from street to reception, lift access, room doorway, bathroom layout, and shower arrangement. | Current photos and measurements for the actual room and entrance. |
| Attraction | Step-free entrance, accessible toilet, gradients, surfaces, internal transport, and restricted areas. | A visitor map plus a direct answer from staff about the route you plan to use. |
| Metro | Lift at the required exit, transfer distance, and current lift availability. | The operator’s station plan and current notices. |
| Car transfer | Space and handling for your mobility equipment, vehicle entry, and exact drop-off. | Confirmation for the booked vehicle rather than an assumption about every car category. |
Historic places need a route within the route
A courtyard hotel or water-town lane can have thresholds and bridges even when the main road is close. A scenic cable car may still leave steps at both ends. Ask which part of the advertised visit is actually reachable, and whether a companion can manage the route without unsafe lifting.
Shanghai publishes city-specific accessibility information that can help you begin a local plan. It does not guarantee access at every venue or in another city. A wheelchair symbol on a general map should prompt a question about the particular facility, not end the investigation.
Make rests and alternatives part of the booking
Choose a coherent area for the day and allow time to rest. Keep a realistic alternative if a lift, path, or transport service is unavailable. If your visit depends on staff assistance, arrange it beforehand and reconfirm the time. The useful measure is whether the whole experience fits your needs, not merely whether the entrance can be reached.
