Beijing
Imperial sites, national museums, hutongs, parks, creative districts, and Great Wall day trips make Beijing essential.

Beijing is the national capital in northern China, with historic central districts surrounded by a very large metropolitan area. The Great Wall’s visited sections lie outside the central city; choosing a hotel near your daily transport matters.
An imperial plan within a much larger capital
The city became a major imperial capital under the Yuan and was reshaped under the Ming and Qing. Its ceremonial axis, palace, temples, and hutong neighborhoods survive alongside national institutions and modern districts. Looking at how streets connect these layers makes the city more understandable than treating each monument as an isolated highlight.

Palaces, a harvest temple, and the lanes in between
Spend one day around the Palace Museum and Jingshan, another around the Temple of Heaven or Summer Palace, and a separate excursion at a managed Great Wall section. Hutongs around the central lakes reveal smaller-scale residential space. The National Museum and other collections provide context, while contemporary districts show Beijing beyond its imperial image.
Use the imperial center to understand the city’s formal arrangement, then spend a separate afternoon in a hutong area where access is public. Temple of Heaven introduces another part of imperial life, while the Summer Palace is a larger landscape excursion. A Great Wall day belongs outside this central-city sequence. Group visits geographically and check reservations first; moving between distant sites can consume the time you hoped to spend inside them. Beijing becomes richer when palace architecture and ordinary neighborhood spaces are allowed equal attention.
An imperial-center day
Reserve the Forbidden City first, follow the permitted route through the palace, and keep a nearby hutong or park outing flexible afterward. Check the exit before arranging the next stop.
A different Beijing day
Choose the Temple of Heaven or Summer Palace as the main visit. A Great Wall excursion has its own transfer and walking plan and should not be treated as another central-city monument.
Roast duck and the practical city day
Peking duck is a celebratory restaurant meal; zhajiangmian noodles, jianbing, and steamed buns belong to a different everyday rhythm. Ask how portions are sized and order a mix of dishes rather than several heavy meat courses. Food neighborhoods include both local traditions and cooking from across China.
Allow several full sightseeing days and check reservations for major museums and heritage sites. Distinguish Tiananmen Square entry arrangements from Palace Museum admission. A small map distance may still involve security, walking, or a change of transport.
