Check Reservations Early
Check the attraction’s official booking channel, opening days, and passport requirements. Save your confirmation and know which entrance to use.

The practical question is not simply whether an attraction is popular. It is where its real tickets are sold, when they become available, and which identity document must match the booking. Work that out before arranging the rest of the day.
Use the attraction’s own booking identity
Many reservations take place in WeChat mini programs. Search for the attraction’s exact official Chinese name, check that the operator is the attraction, and follow its ticketing instructions. A similarly named account can be an intermediary. A paid third-party tour or a ticket request is not the same as confirmed admission.
The Palace Museum is a useful concrete example: look for the official 故宫博物院 mini program. Its published visitor guidance says individual tickets open seven days before the visit at 20:00 Beijing Time, and same-day tickets are not sold. Monday closure generally applies except on legal public holidays. Recheck the current notice before arranging the day, because special openings and construction can alter access.
Finish the reservation, not just the payment
- Choose the actual date and available time slot, then the appropriate ticket category.
- Select Passport where the system offers document types for overseas visitors, and enter each visitor’s details carefully.
- Check whether a special exhibition, boat, cable car, or performance requires an additional reservation or ticket.
- Save the confirmed reservation, its reference, the correct entrance, and cancellation conditions offline. Carry the original document used for booking.
Plan around a real entrance
For the Palace Museum, the standard entrance is Wumen, the Meridian Gate on the south side. The north side is an exit, not an interchangeable entrance. A city map centered on the palace can put you close to the wrong gate. Similar entrance-versus-exit questions matter at large scenic areas.
If a reservation is unavailable, change the day or choose another meaningful activity. Avoid a seller claiming to bypass official arrangements. Hotels and reputable guides may help you understand a Chinese interface, but that assistance does not give them authority to ignore an attraction’s rules.
