Make Ordering Easier

Use a menu photo or translation tool to explain what you want. For allergies, carry a clear written note and confirm ingredients rather than relying on a dish name.

The words on a menu can describe a cooking method or a poetic name rather than a complete ingredient list. Tofu may come with pork, a vegetable dish may use oyster sauce, and a noodle bowl may depend on meat stock. Ask about the ingredient that matters rather than trusting the picture.

Three ways a restaurant may take your order

At a counter, choose the item, pay, and take the receipt or queue number as instructed. At a table-service restaurant, ask for a menu and order with the server. At a QR-ordering restaurant, scan the table code in WeChat or Alipay, open the menu, choose dishes, and inspect the checkout; the code may identify your table rather than immediately collect payment.

If the mini program will not accept your number or payment method, ask staff to help place the order and agree on another payment route. Do not assume that a failed app means there is no way to buy a meal. A shared restaurant dish can be much larger than a solo noodle bowl, so ask about portions before ordering several.

Phrases that lead to a useful answer

What you need to askChinese phraseWhat it does not establish
No chili不要辣。A request to omit chili does not settle every ingredient or cross-contact issue.
Does it contain pork?这个里面有猪肉吗?Also ask about stock, lard, or toppings when they matter.
Can you make it without meat?可以不放肉吗?Removing visible meat does not necessarily remove animal stock or sauces.
I have a severe peanut allergy我对花生严重过敏,请确认食物和烹饪过程都不接触花生。The kitchen must actually understand and be able to meet the requirement; a translated card alone cannot guarantee safety.
Is this one portion?这是一份吗?Confirm whether a displayed price is per piece, plate, or weight.

Use translation for the menu, people for the preparation

Baidu Translate can help with menu photographs, and Pleco can identify a particular word such as an ingredient. Ask a server about the kitchen’s actual preparation. For a serious allergy, have the written explanation checked before travel and choose a venue able to answer reliably; select another option if it cannot.

At a food stall, look for clear handling and food cooked thoroughly to order. A queue shows popularity, not a guarantee about ingredients or hygiene. When ordering seafood or an unfamiliar shared dish, establish the ingredient, cooking method, quantity, and price together. That conversation is more useful than trying to judge a meal from a translated title alone.
